Mobility in Menopause: How to relieve stiffness
Author Co-founder of Essentrics, Sahra Esmonde-White

Nine years ago at 41, I had sudden ovarian failure, which sent me straight into menopause. At the time, the only symptom I had ever heard of was hot flashes. Over the years that followed, I noticed increased stiffness in my joints, tight muscles overall, and issues with connective tissue. Although I was young, I thought it was a normal part of aging. When a recent study on the musculoskeletal symptoms of menopause was released in 2024, it all made sense. Over the years, I have personally experienced all these musculoskeletal symptoms! The only thing that kept them at bay was the dynamic stretching in Essentrics, which I would do regularly, even before bed, when I was feeling particularly tight.
As hormones shift during menopause, many women begin to feel stiffness and joint pain, symptoms now recognized as part of menopause. This isn’t just about aging; it’s your body reacting to changes in estrogen. Due to groundbreaking research and long-overdue conversations about menopause, we now have a better understanding of how to manage symptoms and feel better during this life stage.
This is where mobility comes in: Mobility is the ability to move your joints with strength, control, and ease through their full range of motion. It helps relieve stiffness, protects your muscles and joints, and supports overall physical health.
How to Relieve your Stiffness:
The Essentrics Approach
The key to managing your musculoskeletal symptoms is simple: dynamic range of motion exercises. Essentrics makes the lubrication of your joints and hydration of your fascia a priority, but it is not passive stretching; it is dynamic and includes strength. Practiced by women of all ages around the world, the technique is often done as a stand-alone workout as it increases both flexibility and strength. Although equipment-free, it is still a weight-bearing workout that improves muscle mass and bone health. Many women who cannot lift weights and need alternatives to stay healthy and moving love this technique. And those who do strength training with weights incorporate Essentrics to help rebalance their joints and increase their flexibility.
Your body doesn’t have to feel like it’s aging:
Essentrics has always moved beyond the “no pain, no gain” mindset – focusing instead on what it needs to remain feeling young. By engaging and challenging all 650 muscles through full-body exercises, you can maintain and regain head-to-toe mobility.
