Menopause & the workplace

For women experiencing menopause, understanding and managing symptoms is key to maintaining performance and well-being at work.

Consider the following:

  • Recognize Symptoms: Be aware of cognitive, physical, and psychological changes, such as hot flushes, muscle aches, and poor concentration.
  • Adjust Your Environment: Seek adjustments like dressing in layers, accessing cooler spaces, and ensuring regular breaks for movement or rest.
  • Communicate Needs: Discuss flexible work hours or specific accommodations with your employer to manage symptoms effectively.

Guidance for Employers

Employers play a crucial role in supporting employees through menopause. Actions to consider include:

  • Educate and Train: Raise awareness among all employees to foster an open, stigma-free environment.
  • Review Policies: Ensure policies for diversity and inclusion cover menopause, and consider its impact on absences and flexible work arrangements.
  • Provide Support: Offer flexible working hours, access to cool drinking water, and variations in uniform requirements to accommodate symptoms.
  • Promote Well-being: Encourage a healthy lifestyle and provide access to support programs, such as employee assistance programs.

By addressing menopause with sensitivity and support, employers can create an inclusive workplace where every employee feels valued and understood.
